wow, this made my day. // 6.02.2009

Just received this email, after agencyspy tweeted my link (which is no doubt awesome in itself) but this made me smile.

--------

Jacquelyn,

My name is Colin Murphy and I am an aspiring Art Director just coming out of Syracuse University. I saw your book, when agengyspy posted it on twitter. AWESOME work. I look up to your well done, simplistic work as a level I hope my work will be someday. Good luck finding a job, I'm in the same process to. But with a book like that, I have no doubt you'll land at a great agency. I'm looking to be in New York too, along with every other city, so maybe someday our paths will cross.

Best,
Colin Murphy

the cover of the new yorker - from an iphone // 5.25.2009

this is incredible. the cover of june 1st's new yorker was painted by Jorge Colombo on an iphone. my favorite quote is from the art editor of the magazine saying “All too often the technology is directed in only one direction, which is to make things more tight, and this, what he did very well, is use this technology for something that is free flowing, and I think that’s what makes it so poetic and magical.” i couldn't agree more. however, its sort of strange to me, as beautiful as this image is...i feel like we're on the cusp of things completely changing. that print, an "archaic" medium that some people say is being completely phased out could be infiltrated in such a way by a completely new technology...is something notable.

what goes around comes around. // 5.18.2009

you may have already seen this. its been winning a ton of awards, but i saw it on FFFFound and then read that Big Ant International in NYC was behind it. regardless of your political beliefs or feelings about the war, you can't deny that this is an intriguing and effective anti war statement.

this logo makes me happy. // 5.14.2009

i really adore the new USA networks logo. sometimes when i'm watching shows i get sidetracked by its awesomeness. i think i might give it a little more credit than it deserves since its a second rate network i then assume it should have second rate design. but this logo is stellar. it makes my guilty pleasure television that much more enjoyable, in this case Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. don't judge.

i saw this on AnomolyNY's twitter today and just had to pass it along. nevermind the fact that i'm a little biased because the netherlands, specifically amsterdam, is my favorite place. this is an absolutely beautiful way of tracking the sms messages sent in the city on new years and queen's day. above are some screenshots of Aaron Koblin's project and a video. check it out.

theres a war going on between audi and bmw in santa monica. i think what bmw did is awesome, and if you disagree then i dont want to be friends with you.

is this guy serious!? // 4.09.2009

i'd love to know what these are made of, at first i thought they were ice sculptures but upon further inspection i'm thinking some sort of plastic. check out the rest of mark's work here.

four hours of play in about 2 minutes. // 3.19.2009

a friend sent me this great little video of a baby playing with his toys. i just think that its really relevant because curiosity is key - it keeps life, work, and play entertaining. i love how he plays with the shipping box/tube and bookshelf almost as much as his little car. it just goes to show.

this craig guy is a genius. // 3.16.2009

i was exploring some agencies and i stumbled upon Campfire. they're the ones responsible for the TrueBlood campaign, which i absolutely love. on their blog i found these postings by mystery man known only by the first name of "craig" - the idea is clever and the writing is great. i don't know who is behind it all, but i figured it was worth a repost.

love the look of these. // 3.02.2009

100 feelings felt // 2.12.2009

i'll admit that i love the immediacy of the digital age but everyone remembers the excitement you felt waiting for a roll of film to be developed. opening that package of pictures was like opening a present and each picture brought back memories of the days past. unlike now when you can take pictures of the party you're at and post them to flickr or the book (facebook) within minutes. brendan dawes came up with a very very very cool idea. 100 feelings felt is a project that discusses the then versus now, and allows you to hold a little piece of the day's cyberweb in your hand. you type in a date, and it pulls quotes that discuss feelings from all over the internet on that day. it's mostly blogs and stuff, but some of the quotes are absolutely genius. heres the best part - you can pick your favorites and have them printed into little letter pressed cards. love it. here's the site, you gotta check it out: www.100feelingsfelt.org

this is how i feel today. // 2.10.2009

honestly, even though i should probably be in a terrible mood (my freelance gig is up this friday and the economy is in the shitter - everything is up in the air) i still feel like this piece sums up my mood. life is good and i can't complain. jobs are easier to find than love - even in this economy.

one of my favorite things in nyc! // 1.27.2009

i rarely take the B or Q line - but when i do this is always a treat! the "masstransitscope" is an animation painted and lit up on the tunnel walls.  as you can see it comes to life while the train is in motion. i really love this thing - it almost makes up for the fact that the B and Q seems to run so infrequently that i usually wind up waiting 15 minutes for my train. even during rush hour. every cloud has a silver lining!

photoshopped ads. // 1.13.2009

its all over the blogs this morning, so i'll be surprised if you haven't seen it already. to quote gizmondo this is "pitch perfect adbusting" i love the idea of being able to make a statement with pre-existing visual stimuli. this particular project reminds me of the dove's evolution commercial. i love how it brings attention to the fact that the images we see in the media are seriously tweaked and twerked to create a "more beautiful" celebrity, or in the case of the tabloids - occasionally a less attractive one. regardless, our self perception is being affected by these images we constantly see. it's refreshing to be reminded that those images aren't always, dare i say...the most honest ones.

fabulous beverage, fabulous color. // 12.12.2008

so here is some exciting news to come from pantone. they've announced their official color of 2009. i think it is a perfect choice because this is the dawn of a new era. its all thanks to barry O, our president elect. the future is looking pretty bright. maybe i'm reading into it, but its my take on this gorgeous color choice.

love this idea, but is it me or does "hope" seem a little forced? the majority of people I know wouldn't have two sets of couches in their living room. but then again i live in nyc and most of my friends can barely fit one couch in their "living rooms" :)

I found this is a perfect little chart illustrating the different ways to get your caffeine fix. I highly recommend anyone traveling to italy print out a copy and keep it in their wallet as a little cheat sheet. You wouldn't want to embarrass yourself by asking what a cafe americano is. total tourist red flag. Oh, and also make sure not to ask for your order "to go." I've been told by my friends in Florence that its an unknown concept in Italy. Breakfast, like all meals should be enjoyed. I think us Americans could learn a lot from that attitude. One more thing I learned while over there, cappuccinos should only be had in the morning. Ciao!

new cs4 ad. // 11.20.2008

this is an amazing idea from Agency 141 in Jakarta, Indonesia. It's sure to make any photoshop fanatic flip. it also really reminds you how far technology has taken us, and how different things are today than even 50 years ago.

genius. // 11.11.2008

I found this on one of my favorite design blogs, NOTCOT and I just had to re-post. How often have you wished that something like this existed? They're called Swim City Slippers and they're absolutely genius. This italian made life saver turns your cute little pumps waterproof! They're so small that when you get to your destination you can just take them off and store them in your bag. Gone are the days of picking your shoes based on the weather conditions. Let me tell you, with the torrential downpours in NYC these days I'm definitely going to pick up a pair. I'd personally opt for black version, the purple is a little too much for my taste. But you can get whatever color your little heart desires if you head to the Swims website.

PS. The best detail has got to be the subway maps on the soles of different famous cities.

 // 7.18.2008

so my favorite facebook application is graffiti and they just came out with an amazing update. you can now watch a video of the making of other people's artwork. I think its so interesting to watch the creative process of other people - where they messed up, or how they went about shading a certain area, even how sometimes they can start one way and wind up in a completely different direction. Here are some of my favorites.

skinnies eat their faces off. // 7.06.2008

it always suprises me that the contestants in eating contests are as thin as they are. anyway,
this 4th of july was the annual nathan's hotdog eating contest at coney island in brooklyn.
i watched it for the first time in all of my 22 years...and im so glad i did. i witnessed history.

this year joey chesnut held his title as hot dog eating champion by beating takeru kobayashi. after they both ate exactly 59 hotdogs in ten minutes, the tie breaker was to then eat five more. literally even thinking about that makes me a little nauseous. this was the first time since the contest started in 1918 that there has been a tie. so im glad i watched, but i certainly won't be looking at a hot dog the same way for (at least) a couple months.

ps. anyone notice kobayashi's mustard and ketchup hair? i bet he did that on purpose.

this is an awesome OOH campaign for the bronx zoo. i think its genius that they used the city itself to create the animals. i've seen it all over the web, so i was hesitant to post it myself but in the end it was just too good not to. so, enjoy.

my street. // 6.27.2008

i found this on wooster collective a little while ago and i forgot to post it. this is some street art that starting popping up this past december/january - if i remember correctly. the great thing about it its in my neighborhood (it was all over smith street in brooklyn) one of the interviews even takes place in front of the restaurant i used to waitress at when i was in college. obviously, i noticed the shadows immediately so its really great to hear the back story of the artist explaining exactly what he did, what inspired him and all that. he mentions that the shadows symbolize time, more specifically the passing of time...i thought that was pretty interesting. but, i can't lie the best part by far is the fact that it was on my corner. lol

this is what i love, public art that makes a statement. he's altering our world and the way we see it, but he's doing it simply by cleaning off the dirt that is already there. it brings up a lot of interesting questions. people have tried to make the argument that what he is doing isn't actual graffiti and that it shouldn't be illegal, ect. i'm all for street art but this particular process is just as permanent as any spray paint would be. his art will be there until someone cleans the wall in its entirety.

ps. watching this video makes my inner germaphobe scream, but its still very cool none the less.
